The Fisher F5 Metal Detector – Our Guide

Fisher are among the worlds leading metal detecting brands, they’ve continuously wowed their users with their expertise and design of new and high quality metal detectors. One series of Fisher’s metal detectors has particularly stood out, the F series.

The F series has been an instant hit, with users praising every model that has been created for it. Today we’ll see if the Fisher F5 metal detector can live up to the Fisher F series brilliant reputation.

What are the Main Features of the Fisher F5 Metal Detector?

  • Variable Tone Pin Point System – Using a pin point system helps the user accurately distinguish between the different types of metal in the ground.
  • Manual Ground Balance – Being able to adjust the ground balance is quite important for many detectorists. When scanning the ground, the readings will become more accurate if the ground balancing is set correctly.
  • Visual and Audio Target ID – When the user has found a metal object, the Fisher F5 metal detector will alert them as to where and what type of metal it is they have found.
  • Various Modes – These modes include an all metal mode, discrimination mode and a static pin point mode. All are key in making a great system for a metal detector.

Design

The design of the Fisher F5 metal detector is tailored for the professional metal detectorist. With heaps of settings and different technological terms, this isn’t a metal detector to mess around with.

The Fisher F5 is powered by two 9 volt batteries, giving it immense power and the ability to run for forty hours straight.

There is a range of coils that can be included with the Fisher F5 metal detector, these consist of the 10” Elliptical Concentric Waterproof coil as well as the 11” DD search coil.

The metal detector itself is well constructed, the frame is sturdy and quite attractive. Hints of a metallic yellow colour really make the Fisher F5 a vibrant, appealing metal detector without encroaching on its professionalism.

  • The Fisher F5 Pro Metal Detector is a powerful off-road detector with professional performance at an incredible price.
  • It combines analog technology with digital for better detection capabilities and has a full menu with extensive options on a single LCD display.
  • A large display screen will show you the target identification as well as its depth, whether in "all metal" or "discrimination" search mode.
  • The F5 operates on all types of soil as it features a "ground balancing" compound circuit, allowing you to detect in difficult areas for other detectors.
  • The F5 is a professional metal detector at your budget!

What is the Fisher F5 Metal Detector built to detect?

Like other two digit target ID metal detectors, the Fisher F5 metal detector can detect a range of metal types. These are noted below:
0-15, Iron
20-24, Pull tabs and foil
30-32, Nickel
36-42, Pull tabs
58-60, Zinc
70, Dimes and Copper
80, Quarters
88, Half Dollar
92, Silver Dollars

If you’re not American, then researching what metals their coins are composed of will help you to understand which metals these represent.
The Fisher F5 metal detector can also operate in temperatures of -20 Degrees Celsius to 50 Degrees Celsius. Impressive!

Control Panel and Display

Fisher have given the control panel of the F5 a sporty feel, with a large display and numerous dials.
Below we’ll explain how the Fisher F5 metal detector functions when using these buttons and dials.

Buttons (left to right):
  • Phase Lock – This button will update the internal ground balance setting to the users preference.
  • Tones – Utilising this button allows the user to select one of four ways to group target types by tone.
  • Pin Point – Activating the pin point mode permits the user to receive a more accurate location on their target.
  • Notch – The notch setting enables the user to eliminate detected metals that they would rather not dig up. Clicking the notch button again will bring back the eliminated target metal.
  • Frequency – If the user should encounter electromagnetic interference whilst using the Fisher F5 metal detector, the frequency button will adjust the frequency to make up for the interference.
Dials (left to right):
  • GND BAL – Not only can this dial change the internal ground balance setting, it can also cancel out naturally occurring minerals for easier target detecting.
  • Gain – As well as being able to turn the detector on and off, the gain dial increases the signal from a buried metal object so the user can find it quicker.
  • Threshold – When in Discrimination mode, negative threshold values suppress sensitivity, whereas positive threshold values make weak targets easier to hear.
  • Discrimination – The Discriminate dial helps the user hear/find the metals they have chosen to find.
Display Segments:
  • Target Categories – Eight categories are indicated on the top of the display screen. A rectangular icon will light up over the category in Discrimination or All Metals mode, to describe the metal object being scanned.
  • Discrimination Indicators – When a line appears over one of the target categories, this means the metal group chosen won’t be detected.
  • Target ID – A two digit number in the centre of the screen will appear when scanning over a metal object, these numbers correspond to the target categories above.
  • Depth – Holding down the pin point button will change the target ID numbers into a depth indicator. This allows the user to understand how far down the metallic object is.
  • Confidence – Not all detectors can be sure a certain metal is from a specific group, this is where the confidence metre can be of use. Found at the base of the display, if the Fisher F5 metal detector is confident of an object’s type, then all five bars will illuminate, if it isn’t confident, then the number of bars will be lower.
  • Battery Indicator – On the left hand side of the screen a small line of bars indicate the battery voltage, this demonstrates how much power the user has left.
  • % Fe 3 O 4 – The bar graph associated with these symbols displays the magnetic susceptibility of the soil. The percentage will be separated into four groups: H – High, M – Medium, L – Low, and VL – Very Low.
  • Phase – The two digit phase number located on the right hand side of the screen indicates what type of ground mineralisation has occurred. These types include: 0 – 10, Wet salt and alkali, 5 – 25, Metallic iron, 26 – 39, Some salt water beaches, 40 – 75, Red, yellow and brown iron type clay minerals and finally 75 – 95, Black iron minerals.
  • Setting – The two digit number on the bottom left hand corner of the screen can represent many different settings, including: Internal ground balance, Gain, Threshold, Discrimination, Frequency and Audio Tone Selections.

And breathe, it is a lot of information to take in, but understanding it all is important if you’re going to purchase a Fisher F5 metal detector.

What are the Pros and Cons of the Fisher F5 Metal Detector?

Pros:
  • Harsh Ground Conditions – Fisher have manufactured the F5 metal detector to operate on all types of soil, whether they’re tainted by natural minerals or not.
  • Automatic Retune – With the Fisher F5 metal detector, the user can just turn their detector on and go. Automatic retune saves the users previous settings and will go back to those settings the next time they turn their metal detector on.
  • Lightweight – At 3lbs, the Fisher F5 metal detector weighs about the same as three tins of beans. The lighter a metal detector is, the less arm ache you’ll have to endure.
  • Four Tone Identification – Having a four tone identification, helps the user identify each metal group.
  • Warranty – A five year warranty is available from some sites. Take advantage of this option as it serves as a safety net for your product and your money.
  • Quality – The Fisher F5 metal detector is made extremely well. The technology paired with the attractive and robust design surely helps it sell so well.
  • Easy to Use – At first glance, one may be scared by the sheer amount of buttons and display settings but users of the Fisher F5 metal detector have praised it as an easy to use machine. If you struggle with technology though, make sure you don’t throw the manual away.
Cons:
  • No Backlight – A backlight is essential for night/low light detecting, unfortunately the Fisher F5 doesn’t cater for this. The display also can’t be back lit so, if you do take it out at night, take a torch with you.
  • Accessories – Additional goodies always make the customer feel good, but they will be disappointed in the lack thereof with the Fisher F5 metal detector.
  • Price – Ranging from £300 to over £500, the Fisher F5 metal detector is a bit pricy, especially when there aren’t many accessories included. Yet, as Fisher is such a well known brand, we can understand why they’d appeal to the higher end of the market.
